Do you ever get home after a late night and just go straight to bed, too tired to wash your face?
Some people forget that cleansing your face is one of the most important steps in your daily skincare routine, especially if you’re wearing makeup during the day/night. A good cleanser is important but you don’t need to spend enormous amounts of money on expensive cleansers that claim to ‘change’ the ‘skin you’re in’.
Throughout the day your skin is subjected to many harsh environmental factors that are just part of everyday life and often out of your control. Pollutants such as secondhand smoke, dust mites, mould, carbon monoxide, air fresheners, VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds), chemical sprays (cleaning agents, hair spray, perfumes, and deodorants) and makeup, just to name a few! When it comes to the end of the day these impurities build up, creating an unhealthy barrier on your skin, which can contribute to dryness, dullness, clogged pores, allergic reactions, skin irritations, inflammation and my least favorite—premature ageing!
With this ‘barrier’ in place, nutrients in your other skincare products (Restorative Night Serum) are also prevented from penetrating the skin cells at a deeper level, where they would be able to actually restore and regenerate.
So, your first step is to remove pollutants and dirt from your skin with proper cleansing! Water alone is not enough as much of the build up is oil based and as we know water and oil don’t mix!
I recommend cleansing your face morning and night – removing not only dirt but impurities as well, then toning your skin and allowing your skin to absorb and hydrate before applying makeup or heading out into the chemical-filled world.
It’s important that you find the right cleanser for your skin type – obviously, I would suggest using only natural and organic products, like JOI Pure, full of phytonutrients and essential oils that will ‘feed’ the skin. My favourite daily cleanser is the Gentle Facial Wash, a gentle cleansing milk that moisturises as it cleanses, removing make-up and impurities from the skin. I also like the Complete Cream Cleanser for times when my skin is dry or when I have been out at night and need to remove more makeup, particularly eye makeup – It’s brilliant!
Toning is crucial as your second step in the cleansing routine. It removes the last traces of cleanser, restores the PH and refreshes the skin. I love our new Floral Toning Mists – they tone and hydrate! Following with a quality moisturiser will ensure that your skin is clean, hydrated, moisturised and protected, especially as we come into these colder months.
The Hydrating Day Cream for younger skin or the Rejuvenating Facial Cream for the more mature or drier skin types are the perfect addition to your morning skincare routine, followed by the Triple AAA Serum in the evening; a luxurious facial oil that will help your skin cells to regenerate overnight.
You should be excited about your skincare products, they should leave you feeling fresh, hydrated and ready to tackle the day! - Don’t be fooled by cleansers that foam excessively – more foam does not mean a cleaner face, if your skin feels tight or dry after cleansing then it’s stripped your face of its essential natural oils.
- Double cleanse if you wear makeup. The first cleanse will remove make-up and surface impurities that act as a barrier. Your second cleanse will then penetrate into the skin for a deeper cleanse.
- Cleanse in the morning and the evening. The morning cleanse balances overnight oil production, while an evening cleanse will remove make-up and dirt, improving hydration and assisting with the anti-ageing process that occurs overnight.
- Never wash your face with a bar of soap, or any body wash that is designed to wash your body, not your face – other soaps contain harsh detergents and additives that strip your skin of natural oils and increase the risk of breakouts and impurities.
